Your body is constantly at work; there’s a continuous give and take between the outside world and well..your insides!
The skin alongside your liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph nodes and colon- is in charge of your body’s natural process of detoxification.
The lungs act like a giant air filter, they rid your body of airborne toxins, fumes and of course, CO2! Your liver and kidneys work together to metabolize all chemical substances - even the good kind! They also meticulously pluck out toxins from your blood and prepare it for excretion. Your lymph nodes are all over your body, and their main job is to fight off infections. They trap viruses, bacteria and other malignant beings before they can spread across your body. Your colon is like a big sponge - it reabsorbs all the fluids and other key nutrients from the indigestible material coming from your small intestine. It’s also in charge of excreting solid waste so that it’s not re-circulated in your bloodstream.
Alas, we have our biggest organ yet; the skin. When there is an excess of toxins in our system, it can be manifested by breakouts, blackheads, enlarged pores and dark circles. Although there are many other contributing factors which can have similar side effects, one should always keep in mind that elimination is the skin’s primary function.
“We don't know all the waste products that are absorbed or released from the skin; what we do know is that it is always exchanging oxygen and waste. All forms of detox benefit the skin, particularly exercise, dry skin brushing, Epsom salt baths, and saunas.” (Source)
