Everyone’s skin microbiome is as unique as a fingerprint; no two are the same! This makes it difficult to understand and pinpoint the specific causes of skincare diseases, especially when there is a diverse and complex colony of bacteria and fungi working together to keep pathogens away. A once mysterious miniature world, the skin microbiome has slowly been uncovered, and as we discover more about the role of this delicate ecosystem, the more we understand its importance beyond aesthetics. 


Even before the global pandemic, we have been living in an extremely sterilized world - who would have thought that being a germaphobe is actually not so great? Our skin is like a massive rainforest, with thousands of species living within it. However, with the increased use of harsh anti-bacterial gels, soaps and other topical products, our rainforest is slowly being cleared. Losing this biodiversity within our skin’s microbiome leaves an open door to numerous skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and more.

 

 

What can we do, outside of preventing the use of these harsh products, to ensure we are caring for our miniature rainforest in our skin?

  1. Pre and probiotics; prebiotic foods like garlic, onions and asparagus feed the existing bacteria on your skin, whilst probiotic foods like yoghurt, sauerkraut, tempeh and miso add new bacteria to the skin.  
  2. Water; everyone knows that water is a magical worker. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated - hydrated skin not only equal stronger protection but it also fuels microbiotic processes between and within the bacteria living on the skin

 

Its necessary to realise the importance of skin's microbiome and good bacteria. Harsh chemical products can ruin this precious layer of rainforest on our skin. Choosing natural products which nurture these bacterias is necessary. Don't just wash, WOSH!
